Julian Bachynskyi (1880-1937) was a Ukrainian political activist and writer. He was born in the village of Krasne, in the Ternopil region of Ukraine. He studied at the Lviv Polytechnic Institute and later at the University of Vienna. He was a member of the Ukrainian Social Democratic Party and was active in the Ukrainian National Movement. He was a leader of the Ukrainian People's Republic and was a signatory of the Act of Union of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the West Ukrainian People's Republic in 1919. He was also a member of the Ukrainian delegation to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. In 1920, Bachynskyi wrote the Memorandum to the Government of the United States on the Recognition of the Ukrainian People's Republic, which was an appeal to the United States to recognize the independence of Ukraine. The memorandum was published in the United States and Europe and was widely circulated. Bachynskyi was arrested by the Soviet authorities in 1937 and executed in the same year.
