John Atkinson Hobson (1858–1940) was an English economist, social theorist, and critic of imperialism. He was born in Derby, England, and educated at the University of Cambridge. He was a professor of economics at the University of Manchester from 1892 to 1910, and a professor of economics and political science at the University of London from 1910 to 1924. Hobson is best known for his book Imperialism: A Study (1902), which argued that imperialism was driven by economic interests rather than by racial or cultural superiority. He also wrote extensively on the topics of socialism, democracy, and international relations. His other works include The Evolution of Modern Capitalism (1894), The Economics of Distribution (1897), and The War in South Africa (1900).
