J.R. Orton

J.R. Orton was an American author and journalist who wrote about the maritime industry in the mid-19th century. He was born in 1825 in New York City and worked as a clerk in a shipping office before becoming a journalist. He wrote for several newspapers, including the New York Herald and the New York Times. Orton wrote several books about the maritime industry, including Trial Trip of the Flying Cloud (1859), which detailed the maiden voyage of the clipper ship Flying Cloud. He also wrote The Cruise of the Steam Yacht North Star (1860), which chronicled the voyage of the steam yacht North Star. Orton died in 1867 at the age of 42.
