James Bonwick (1817–1906) was an English-born Australian historian, author, and educator. He was born in London, England, and emigrated to Australia in 1852. He was a lecturer in history and literature at the University of Melbourne from 1856 to 1876, and was the first professor of history at the University of Tasmania from 1876 to 1881. Bonwick wrote several books on Australian history, including The Last of the Tasmanians (1870), The Discovery and Settlement of Port Phillip (1880), and The Early History of Tasmania (1884). He also wrote books on the history of the British Empire, including The British Empire (1890) and The British Colonies (1893). He was a prolific writer, and his works were widely read in Australia and abroad.
