James Hudson Taylor (1832-1905) was a British Protestant Christian missionary to China and founder of the China Inland Mission. He was born in Yorkshire, England, and was the son of a chemist and Methodist lay preacher. Taylor was converted to Christianity at the age of 17 and felt a call to serve as a missionary in China. He arrived in Shanghai in 1853 and worked in the region for the next 51 years. Taylor was a pioneer in adapting Western methods of evangelism to Chinese culture. He was the first to translate the Bible into the colloquial Chinese language, and he established a network of mission stations throughout the country. He also founded a number of schools and hospitals, and was a strong advocate for the rights of Chinese Christians. Taylor's work was instrumental in the spread of Christianity in China, and he is remembered as one of the most influential Protestant missionaries of the 19th century.
