James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) was a Scottish novelist and playwright best known for his play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. He was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, and educated at the University of Edinburgh. Barrie wrote a number of successful novels and plays, including Quality Street (1901), The Admirable Crichton (1902), and What Every Woman Knows (1908). He also wrote several novels for adults, including The Little Minister (1891) and Margaret Ogilvy (1896). Barrie was a popular figure in London literary circles, and was knighted in 1913. He was also a member of the Order of Merit. He died in 1937, and is buried in Kirriemuir.
