James Thomson (1834-1882) was a Scottish poet and playwright. He is best known for his poem The City of Dreadful Night, which was published in 1874. The poem is a dark and pessimistic exploration of the human condition, and is considered to be one of the most important works of Victorian literature. Thomson was born in Port Glasgow, Scotland, and was educated at the University of Glasgow. He worked as a journalist and editor for several newspapers, and wrote several plays and poems. He was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and his work was heavily influenced by the movement. Thomson died in 1882, at the age of 48.
