James Walker (1809-1874) was an American author and minister. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard College in 1829. He was ordained a minister in the Congregational Church in 1832 and served as pastor of churches in Massachusetts and New York. Walker wrote several books, including The Spirit Proper to the Times (1861), which was a collection of sermons and essays on the topics of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. He also wrote a work on the history of the Congregational Church in America, and several books on Christian ethics and theology. He was a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery and a supporter of the Union cause during the Civil War.
