Jim White was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico in 1921. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was an avid outdoorsman. He was a member of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park Advisory Board and was a frequent visitor to the park. He was also a member of the National Speleological Society and the National Audubon Society. White was a prolific writer and photographer, and his work was featured in numerous publications, including National Geographic, Outdoor Life, and National Parks Magazine. He wrote several books about the area, including Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico, which was published in 1958. White passed away in 2002 at the age of 81.
