Joel Barlow was an American poet, politician, and diplomat. He was born on March 24, 1754, in Redding, Connecticut. Barlow studied at Yale University before becoming a lawyer. During the American Revolution, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army. After the war, he became involved in politics and was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly. In 1787, he traveled to Europe, where he befriended prominent intellectuals such as Thomas Paine and Benjamin Franklin. Barlow's poetry is known for its classical style and his advocacy of Enlightenment values. He died on December 24, 1812, in Avignon, France.
