John Harrison (1693–1776) was an English clockmaker and inventor who invented the marine chronometer, a long-sought-after device for solving the problem of accurately determining longitude while at sea. He is best known for his invention of the marine chronometer, which revolutionized navigation at sea. He also invented the gridiron pendulum and the grasshopper escapement, both of which improved the accuracy of clocks. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and was awarded the Copley Medal in 1773. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of navigation.
