John Mead Gould

John Mead Gould (1837-1918) was an American author, editor, and publisher. He was born in New York City and educated at Columbia College. He began his career as a journalist, working for the New York Tribune and the New York Times. He later became an editor and publisher of several magazines, including The Critic, The Forum, and The Outlook. Gould was a prolific writer, publishing over 30 books, including novels, biographies, and works of history. His works include The Life of Ulysses S. Grant (1886), The Life of Abraham Lincoln (1890), and The History of the Civil War (1895). He also wrote several books on the history of the American Revolution, including The Story of the Revolution (1898) and The War of Independence (1902). Gould was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He was also a member of the American Historical Association and the New York Historical Society. He died in 1918 in New York City.
