José María Eça de Queiroz (1845-1900) was a Portuguese novelist and poet who is considered one of the greatest writers of the 19th century. He was born in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, and studied law at the University of Coimbra. He began his career as a journalist and wrote for several newspapers and magazines. Eça de Queiroz is best known for his novels, which often focus on the social and political issues of his time. His most famous works include The Maias (1888), Cousin Bazilio (1878), and The City and the Mountains (1900). He also wrote several short stories and plays. Eça de Queiroz was a member of the Portuguese Realist movement, which sought to portray the realities of Portuguese life in a realistic and honest way. He was also a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of women. He died in 1900 in Paris, France.
