José Victorino Lastarria (1817-1888) was a Chilean lawyer, politician, and writer. He was born in Santiago, Chile, and studied law at the University of Chile. He was a prominent figure in the Chilean independence movement, and was a leader of the Liberal Party. He was also a prominent figure in the Chilean educational system, and was instrumental in the creation of the University of Chile. He wrote extensively on political and social issues, and his works include El Progreso (1845), El Estado Social (1850), and El Derecho de la Propiedad (1854). He was also a noted historian, and wrote a number of books on the history of Chile. He died in Santiago in 1888.
