José Zorrilla y Moral (1817–1893) was a Spanish Romantic poet and playwright. He is best known for his play Don Juan Tenorio, which is still performed in Spain and Latin America. Zorrilla was born in Valladolid, Spain, and studied law at the University of Valladolid. He began writing poetry at an early age, and his first play, El Zarco, was produced in 1844. He wrote several other plays, including Don Juan Tenorio (1844), which is considered his masterpiece. Zorrilla was a staunch defender of Spanish traditions and culture, and his works often reflect his conservative views. He was also a strong advocate of the Catholic Church, and his works often contain religious themes. Zorrilla was appointed to the Spanish Senate in 1876, and he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in 1881. He died in Madrid in 1893.
