Joseph R. Biden Jr. is an American politician who served as the 47th Vice President of the United States from 2009 to 2017. He also served as a U.S. Senator from Delaware from 1973 to 2009. Biden is a member of the Democratic Party and was the Democratic presidential nominee in the 2020 election. Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the University of Delaware and Syracuse University College of Law. He began his political career as a county councilman in New Castle County, Delaware, and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972. He was re-elected six times and was the fourth-most senior senator at the time of his resignation to assume the vice presidency in 2009. Biden was a key figure in the Obama administration's response to the Great Recession, overseeing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and other legislation aimed at economic recovery. He also played a key role in the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He was a vocal advocate for gun control and LGBT rights. Biden is married to Jill Biden, a teacher and author. They have one daughter, Ashley, and two sons, Hunter and Beau, who died in 2015.
