Kenneth Grahame was born on March 8, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the youngest of five children to a Scottish lawyer and his wife. His family moved to England when he was young and settled in Berkshire. Grahame's early life was marked by tragedy with the death of his mother at a young age and his father's subsequent remarriage. He was educated at St Edward's School in Oxford and later worked as a clerk for the Bank of England. In 1899, he married Elspeth Thomson and they had one son, Alastair. Grahame retired from banking in 1908 to focus on writing full-time.
