The Lakewood Boys in the Frozen North opens aboard a sinking ocean liner in the North Atlantic, where brothers Bob and Jack Lakewood, roused by a collision, help evacuate panicked passengers, including a young woman they escort to a lifeboat, and then risk their lives searching the doomed ship for its missing captain, Frank Blake, who has collapsed from a fainting spell. Bob and Jack sail north, and Captain Blake, grateful for his rescue, arranges for them to be guests aboard his ship and connects them in Nome with the colorful storekeeper Pete Slinger, who in turn secures them a trustworthy Crow Indian guide, Lucky Hogan. The bulk of the story follows the boys' grueling dogsled journey up the frozen Yukon toward the Koyukuk River, tracing rumors of Silas and Long through remote settlements, fending off a wolf pack (during which Bob nearly freezes to death after his rifle jams and his revolver is lost), surviving blizzards and a night dug into a snow shelter, rescuing an injured Jack after a fall, and being robbed of supplies by a treacherous Eskimo whom Lucky pursues and recovers goods from. Eventually they encounter a band of armed half-breed trappers led by a suspicious giant of a man, are taken prisoner at a remote cabin, and through Lucky's stealth in the night manage to disarm their captors and free a starving, mistreated prisoner in the back room—who proves to be Uncle Silas himself. He reveals that Long, obsessed after their prospecting failed, assaulted him and tried to force him to sign over rights to a valuable Colorado gold mine, leaving the narrative poised for further confrontation with Long and the breeds as the escaped party flees north with the rescued uncle.
