Lew Wallace (1827–1905) was an American lawyer, Union general in the American Civil War, politician, and author. He is best known for his historical novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" (1880), which became a bestseller and was adapted into several films. Wallace also served as governor of the New Mexico Territory and U.S. minister to the Ottoman Empire.
