Lieut. George R. Witton (1876-1915) was an Australian soldier and author. He served in the Boer War and was a member of the Australian Light Horse during World War I. He wrote the book Scapegoats of the Empire, which was published in 1907. The book was a critical account of the British military's handling of the Boer War. Witton was court-martialed for his book and sentenced to three years of hard labor. He was later pardoned and released from prison. After his release, he wrote a second book, With the Flag to Pretoria, which was published in 1910. Witton was killed in action in 1915 during the Battle of Gallipoli.
