Ludovic Halévy

Ludovic Halévy (1834–1908) was a French dramatist, novelist, and librettist. He was born in Paris, the son of a prominent Jewish banker. He studied law at the École de Droit, but soon abandoned it for literature. Halévy wrote several plays, including La Juive (1835), which was a great success. He also wrote several novels, including La Reine Margot (1845) and La Dame de Montsoreau (1850). He is best known for his libretti, which he wrote for several operas, including La Juive (1835), La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein (1867), and La Belle Hélène (1864). Halévy was a member of the Académie française and was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1881. He died in 1908 in Paris.
