M.P. Shiel (1865-1947) was a British novelist and short story writer. He is best known for his science fiction and horror stories, which often featured exotic settings and characters. He was also a prolific writer of detective fiction, historical fiction, and fantasy. Shiel was born in Montserrat, West Indies, and educated in England. He began writing professionally in the 1890s, and his first novel, The Purple Cloud, was published in 1901. He wrote more than 50 novels and hundreds of short stories during his career. His works were popular in both Britain and the United States, and he was a frequent contributor to magazines such as The Strand and Pearson's Magazine. Shiel was also a noted playwright, and his plays were produced in London and New York. He was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his novel The Yellow Danger in 1898.
