Born on May 15, 1937, Madeleine Albright is a Czech-American politician and diplomat who served as the first female United States Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001. She was born Marie Jana Korbelová in Prague, Czechoslovakia, to a Jewish family. Her family fled to England after the Nazi occupation and later moved to the United States. Albright earned her Ph.D. in international relations from Columbia University and began her career as a professor at Georgetown University. She served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1997, before becoming Secretary of State under President Bill Clinton.
