Margaret Wolfe Hamilton (1858-1940) was an American computer scientist, inventor, and systems engineer. She is best known for her work on the Apollo 11 mission, which she helped develop the onboard flight software for. She was also a pioneer in the field of software engineering, and was the first person to use the term "software engineering". Hamilton was born in Paoli, Indiana, and attended the University of Michigan, where she earned a degree in mathematics. She then went on to work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on the Apollo 11 mission, where she developed the onboard flight software. Hamilton was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016 for her contributions to the Apollo 11 mission. She is also the author of several books, including "Software Engineering: Principles and Practice" and "Out of the Shadow of the Moon: The Life and Times of Margaret Hamilton".
