Martha Jane Canary (1852–1903), better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontierswoman and professional scout. She was known for her sharp-shooting skills and her daring exploits. She was also a nurse, a Pony Express rider, and a stagecoach driver. Calamity Jane was born in Princeton, Missouri, and moved to Wyoming in the 1870s. She worked as a scout for the U.S. Army during the Indian Wars and was a friend of Wild Bill Hickok. She was also a popular figure in the Wild West shows of the late 19th century. Calamity Jane was a colorful character who was known for her hard-drinking and wild behavior. She was also a devoted mother and a generous friend. She died in 1903 in Deadwood, South Dakota, and was buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery.
