Mary Alice Walton is an American novelist and short story writer who was born in 1943 in New York City. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned a degree in English literature. After graduating, she worked as a journalist for several years before turning to fiction writing full-time. Walton's first novel, "The Dollmaker," was published in 1984 and became an instant bestseller. She has since written numerous other novels, including "The Hours," which was adapted into a film starring Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep.
