Mary Emily Donelson Wilcox

Mary Emily Donelson Wilcox was an American writer and biographer associated with the prominent Donelson family of Tennessee. She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Donelson and Emily Tennessee Donelson, placing her within the extended family circle of President Andrew Jackson; her father had been raised in Jackson’s household and was often regarded as his adopted son. Wilcox is best known for The Life of Andrew Jackson: Pioneer, Patriot, Soldier, Politician and President, a late-nineteenth-century popular biography of Jackson. Her family connections gave her unusual proximity to the traditions, recollections, and public memory surrounding Jackson and the Hermitage circle. Her work presents Jackson as a national hero and reflects the celebratory, patriotic style of historical biography common in her period.
