Mary Seacole was a British-Jamaican nurse, healer, and businesswoman known for her work during the Crimean War. Born in 1805 in Kingston, Jamaica, she was of mixed race, with a Scottish father and a Jamaican mother. Seacole gained medical knowledge from her mother, who was a traditional healer. She traveled extensively, including to Panama and England, before volunteering her services during the Crimean War. Denied official support, she independently established the "British Hotel" near Balaclava to provide care for soldiers. Her autobiography, "Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands," was published in 1857. She died in 1881.
