Mary Webb (1881-1927) was an English novelist and poet. She was born in Shropshire, England, and was educated at home by her father. She wrote her first novel, The Golden Arrow, in 1906, and it was published in 1907. Her most famous novel, Precious Bane, was published in 1924 and was adapted for television in 1989. Webb was known for her vivid descriptions of the English countryside and her use of dialect in her writing. She wrote several other novels, including Gone to Earth (1917) and The House in Dormer Forest (1923). She also wrote poetry and short stories. Webb died in 1927 at the age of 46.
