Matthew Henson (1866–1955) was an African American explorer and author, best known for his role in the 1909 expedition to the North Pole led by Robert Peary. Henson was born in Maryland and worked as a cabin boy before joining Peary on several Arctic expeditions. He co-authored "A Negro Explorer at the North Pole" (1912), detailing his experiences. Despite his significant contributions, Henson's achievements were largely unrecognized during his lifetime due to racial discrimination.
