Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) was a Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright. He is best known for his novel Don Quixote, considered to be the first modern novel. Cervantes was born in Alcalá de Henares, near Madrid, and was educated at a Jesuit school. He served as a soldier in the Spanish Navy and was captured by Barbary pirates in 1575. He was released after five years of captivity and returned to Spain. Cervantes wrote several plays and novels, but Don Quixote is his most famous work. It was published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615. The novel follows the adventures of the knight-errant Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza as they travel through Spain. It is considered a classic of Western literature and has been translated into more than 60 languages. Cervantes died in Madrid in 1616. He is remembered as one of the greatest writers in the Spanish language and is often referred to as the “father of the modern novel.”
