Nahum was an 8th-century BC prophet from the town of Elkosh in the northern kingdom of Israel. He is the author of the book of Nahum in the Hebrew Bible. Little is known about Nahum's life, but he is believed to have lived during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah (715–687 BC). Nahum's book is a prophetic oracle against the Assyrian city of Nineveh, which was the capital of the Assyrian Empire. The book is composed of three chapters and is written in poetic form. In it, Nahum predicts the destruction of Nineveh and the fall of the Assyrian Empire. He also speaks of God's justice and mercy, and of the hope of restoration for the people of Israel. Nahum's book is part of the Minor Prophets in the Hebrew Bible. It is also included in the Christian Old Testament.
