Olaudah Equiano, also known as Gustavus Vassa, was a prominent African writer and abolitionist in the 18th century. Born around 1745 in what is now Nigeria, he was kidnapped and sold into slavery as a child. He eventually purchased his freedom and became an active abolitionist in Britain. Equiano is best known for his autobiography, "The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano," published in 1789, which detailed his experiences and helped fuel the abolitionist movement. He died in 1797.
