Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872–1906) was an influential African American poet, novelist, and playwright. Born in Dayton, Ohio, to parents who were former slaves, Dunbar gained national recognition for his dialect poetry and standard English verse. His notable works include the poetry collections "Majors and Minors" and "Lyrics of Lowly Life." Dunbar's writing often explored themes of racial identity and the African American experience. Despite his early death from tuberculosis, his work left a lasting impact on American literature.
