Pedro Antonio de Alarcón (1833-1891) was a Spanish novelist, playwright, and journalist. He was born in Granada, Spain, and studied law at the University of Granada. He began his career as a journalist, writing for several newspapers in Madrid. He wrote his first novel, El Sombrero de Tres Picos (The Three-Cornered Hat), in 1874. It was an immediate success and was later adapted into an opera by Manuel de Falla. Alarcón wrote several other novels, including El Amigo Manso (The Gentle Friend), El Capitán Veneno (Captain Venom), and El Abencerraje y la hermosa Jarifa (The Abencerraje and the Beautiful Jarifa). He also wrote several plays, including El Loco Dios (The Mad God) and El Loco de la Colina (The Madman of the Hill). Alarcón was a prolific writer and his works were widely read in Spain and Latin America. He was a major influence on the Spanish literary scene of the late 19th century and his works are still widely read today.
