Pío Baroja (1872-1956) was a Spanish novelist, journalist, and essayist. He was born in San Sebastián, Spain, and studied medicine in Madrid. He wrote more than 100 works, including novels, short stories, and essays. His works often focused on the struggles of the working class and the marginalization of the Basque people. He was a member of the Generation of '98, a group of Spanish intellectuals who sought to revive Spanish culture and literature. He was awarded the Cervantes Prize in 1954, the highest honor for Spanish literature.
