The novel follows the story of a young curate, Father John, who is sent to a small village in the English countryside to serve as the local priest. He soon finds himself in the middle of a scandal when he meets the beautiful and talented actress, Miss Lillian, who is performing in the village. Father John is immediately taken with her, and the two soon become close friends. But their relationship is complicated by the fact that Father John is a priest and Miss Lillian is an actress, and their respective professions are seen as incompatible. The novel follows the two as they struggle to reconcile their feelings for each other with their respective professions, and as they face the disapproval of their families and the village. In the end, Father John and Miss Lillian must decide whether they can find a way to be together, or if they must part ways forever.
