Richard F. Burton (1821–1890) was a British explorer, geographer, translator, writer, soldier, and diplomat. He is best known for his travels and explorations in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, as well as his translations of "One Thousand and One Nights" and the "Kama Sutra." Burton was a master of languages, reportedly speaking 29, and his works often focused on the cultures and customs of the regions he explored.
