Richard Steele (1672–1729) was an Irish writer and politician, best known for co-founding the periodicals "The Tatler" and "The Spectator" with Joseph Addison. Steele was born in Dublin and educated at Charterhouse School and Merton College, Oxford. He served in the army before turning to writing and politics. Steele's works often focused on social and moral issues, and he was known for his essays and plays. He also served as a Member of Parliament and held various government positions.
