Richmal Crompton (1890–1969) was an English writer best known for her "Just William" series, featuring the mischievous schoolboy William Brown. Born in Bury, Lancashire, she initially worked as a schoolteacher before turning to writing full-time. Crompton wrote 38 "Just William" books, starting with "Just William" in 1922. She also wrote adult fiction and short stories. Despite contracting polio in 1923, which left her with a permanent disability, she continued to write prolifically until her death.
