Ridgwell Cullum was the pen name of Sidney Groves Burghard, a British novelist born in London on 13 August 1867. He died on 3 November 1943. Cullum became a prolific and widely read writer of adventure fiction, particularly tales set in the Canadian wilderness, the American West, and northern frontier settlements. His experience of travel and ranching in North America informed his fiction, which often features trappers, ranchers, prospectors, Mounted Police, outlaws, and isolated communities tested by violence, weather, and economic conflict. His novels combine romance, melodrama, action, and imperial-era ideas of endurance and frontier life. Cullum’s best-known works include The Night Riders, The Law Breakers, The Hound from the North, The Heart of Unaga, and The Devil’s Keg. Especially popular in the early twentieth century, his books appeared in Britain and abroad and helped establish him as a notable writer of popular frontier adventure.
