Robert Byron (1905-1941) was an English travel writer, art critic, and historian. He is best known for his travel book The Road to Oxiana, which is considered one of the greatest travel books of all time. He was also a prolific art critic, writing for The Spectator, The Times, and The Observer. He wrote several books on the history of art, including The Byzantine Achievement and The Birth of Western Painting. He was also a passionate advocate for the preservation of ancient monuments, and wrote extensively on the subject. He died in 1941 while serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II.
