Robert G. Ingersoll (1833-1899) was an American lawyer, politician, and orator. He was born in Dresden, New York, and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1854. He practiced law in Illinois and served in the Civil War as a colonel in the 11th Illinois Cavalry. Ingersoll was a prominent figure in the freethought movement, which advocated for the separation of church and state and the rejection of religious dogma. He was a popular public speaker and wrote several books, including Some Mistakes of Moses (1879) and The Gods and Other Lectures (1876). He was also a strong advocate for women's rights and the abolition of slavery. Ingersoll died in 1899 in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
