Roger Casement (1864-1916) was an Irish nationalist, humanitarian, and British diplomat. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and educated at the Royal University of Ireland. He joined the British Colonial Service in 1884 and served in various parts of the world, including the Congo Free State, Peru, and the Putumayo region of the Amazon. In 1904, Casement wrote a report on the atrocities committed against the indigenous people of the Congo Free State, which exposed the brutality of the Belgian colonial regime. This report was instrumental in the eventual dissolution of the Congo Free State. In 1911, Casement was knighted for his humanitarian work in the Congo and Peru. He resigned from the British Colonial Service in 1913 and became an active member of the Irish nationalist movement. He was arrested in 1916 for his involvement in the Easter Rising and was executed for treason. Casement is remembered as a humanitarian and a martyr of the Irish nationalist cause. He is also remembered for his work in exposing the atrocities of the Belgian colonial regime in the Congo Free State.
