Rosa Nouchette Carey (1840–1909) was an English novelist. She was born on 5 September 1840 in Stratford-le-Bow, London, the sixth child of William Henry Carey, a shipbroker, and his wife Maria Jane Nouchette, and grew up in a large, close-knit family — an experience that deeply influenced her writing. She was educated at the Ladies' Institute in St John's Wood, developed a passion for reading and writing early, and began writing fiction as a young woman. She published her first novel, Nellie's Memories, in 1868 to a warm reception, and went on to become a prolific and popular Victorian novelist, eventually writing some forty novels. Her work is known for its domestic themes, strong moral and Christian values, focus on family life and relationships, and gentle, sentimental storytelling. Her most celebrated novel, Wooed and Married (1875), brought her wider recognition; other notable works include Not Like Other Girls and Uncle Max. Carey never married and lived much of her life with her family. She was deeply religious, and her Anglican faith strongly shaped her writing. One of the most widely read women novelists of the Victorian era, particularly among young women and family audiences, she died on 19 July 1909 in Putney, London.
