Rufus Merrill (1817-1890) was an American naturalist and author. He was born in New Hampshire and studied at Dartmouth College. He was a professor of natural history at Dartmouth and later at the University of Vermont. Merrill wrote several books on natural history, including A Book About Animals (1850), which was one of the first books to be published in the United States on the subject. He also wrote a work on the birds of New England, and a work on the mammals of the United States. He was a member of the American Ornithologists' Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Merrill was an avid collector of specimens and was known for his detailed observations of the natural world. He was also a passionate advocate for the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats. He was a strong proponent of the establishment of national parks and was instrumental in the creation of the first national park in the United States, Yellowstone National Park.
