He is best known for his short story "A Martian Odyssey", which was published in 1934 and is considered one of the first stories to present a sympathetic and complex alien. He began writing science fiction in 1933, and his stories were published in the leading science fiction magazines of the day, including Astounding Stories, Wonder Stories, and Amazing Stories. Weinbaum's career was cut short by his death from lung cancer in 1935, at the age of 33. He was posthumously inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1998.
