From the French is a novel by Thomas James Wise, first published in 1891. It tells the story of a young Englishman, John, who is sent to France to learn the language and culture. While there, he meets a beautiful French girl, Marie, and falls in love with her. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Marie is already engaged to another man. John must decide whether to pursue his love for Marie or to accept his fate and return to England. Along the way, he learns about the French culture and language, and discovers the true meaning of love.
