Thorne Smith (1892–1934) was an American novelist and playwright. He is best known for his humorous fantasy novels, such as Topper, The Night Life of the Gods, and The Stray Lamb. Smith was born in Annapolis, Maryland, and attended the University of Virginia. After college, he worked as a journalist and editor for various magazines, including The New Yorker. He wrote several plays, including The Bishop Misbehaves, which was adapted into a movie in 1945. Smith's novels often featured characters who were mischievous and irreverent, and his writing style was often described as "lighthearted and whimsical." His works often featured supernatural elements, such as ghosts, gods, and other mythical creatures. Smith died in 1934 at the age of 42. His works remain popular today, and have been adapted into several films and television shows.
