Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, was also a notable author. Born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio, he graduated from West Point in 1843. Grant gained fame as a Union general during the American Civil War. After his presidency, he wrote his memoirs, "Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant," which are highly regarded for their clarity and detail. He completed them shortly before his death on July 23, 1885.
